Why Comb Sounds Make Some Cats Gag 🤢

It is because Cats hear high-pitched sounds that humans cannot. These sounds mimic the high frequencies of small prey. This sudden vibration feels like an unexpected purr or a strange tickle, which startles the cat and triggers a physical gag reflex. It is similar to how humans react to nails on a chalkboard.

For those who don't know, Hearing sensitivity changes with age because younger cats can detect higher frequencies, while older cats often experience hearing loss and may not react at all. This high-frequency discomfort happens in the inner ear and auditory cortex, where sensitive hair cells trigger a acoustic startle reflex.
