A 16-year-old allegedly shot through the locked doors of an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. Three children and a teacher were killed. Police reportedly arrived in about three minutes. But a father on his lunch break got there first. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters were inside the school, reportedly heard the gunfire, saw the attacker enter, and went after him. He stopped the shooter. And according to his family, he doesn't feel like a hero. He feels like he didn't do enough. But there's another part of this story that makes it even more disturbing. About a year ago, I tested what happens when someone shoots the lock on a classroom door. The standard lock failed. The reinforced Flip Lock held up under our test. And that experiment raises a serious question about school security: How much time can a locked door actually buy when someone is determined to get inside? In this video, I break down the reported shooting, the armed citizen who intervened, my own school-door experiment, and the problem with response plans that depend on someone getting to a firearm after the shooting starts. There's also a question surrounding the school district's gun-free policy. Because when seconds mattered, the person who stopped the attacker was already there. A lock can buy time. Police can respond quickly. But the difference between arriving in three minutes and already being there can be enormous. What would you change about the way schools prepare for these situations?
