  For those who don't know, Hearing sensitivity changes with age because younger cats can detect higher frequencies, while older cats often experience hearing loss and may not react at all. This high-frequency discomfort happens in the inner ear and auditory cortex, where sensitive hair cells trigger a acoustic startle reflex.
