This town in China looks almost impossible to build. Lüchun County, also known as the “One-Line City,” stretches along a narrow mountain ridge, with much of the town following a single street roughly 2.5 miles long. Located around 5,700 feet above sea level, this remarkable mountain town faces some serious engineering challenges. Getting water to higher elevations requires powerful pumping systems that move water uphill in stages before it can be stored and distributed. Heavy monsoon rainfall creates another major problem because water soaking into mountain slopes can increase the risk of landslides. Drainage channels help carry rainwater away and protect the ground beneath buildings and roads. The town became an administrative center, attracting government offices, businesses, and more residents. As it grew, construction had to adapt to the limited space along the ridge, with some buildings reaching as high as 20 stories. What makes this place fascinating is how people have adapted everyday infrastructure to an extremely challenging landscape. From water supply and drainage to high-rise construction, Lüchun shows how engineering can help communities function in places where building a town is far from simple. Is this one of the most unbelievable places humans have built a town?
