This seemed like an insane indicator of wealth in my mind at the time. Also having a “computer room” or having your own private phone line

Had a neighbor friend with a pristine white living room that no one was allowed to breathe near.

A girl I went to school with had the white/cream living room WITH A GRAND PIANO and not only did no one sit in there, no one in their family played the piano. 💀

Having a front more formal room that no one touches is from the days when you had more guests like clergy, lady from some booster club, door-to-door salesmen, etc. That way you always had a put together space to meet those type of people. The next generation continued it because it's what they grew up with even though we got more casual as a society and the houses still had the rooms.

We had one growing up. We used it for the christmas tree and christmas morning, boxing watch parties and DeCoRaTiOn.

Living rooms back then were basically museum displays, not for actual living

My bff's mom used to vacuum the carpet in the dining room a certain way so that if you walked on it the footprints would show and and she would yell at you
