    Caliber is the imperial measurement of bullet diameter in hundredths of an inch. So a "50 cal" is actually 0.50 cal or ½" wide, 223 or 0.223 cal is just shy of ¼", 44 magnum is 0.44 cal or 44/100". Metric/NATO is similar but in mm, eg 9mm, 10mm, 20mm, 7.62mm etc. There are crossover Caliber that that are nearly identical like .223 cal and 5.56mm are the same diameter as area 7.62mm and .308 and 9mm is technically .35 cal but it's commonly compared with 0.38 cal.
