설명

GM has unveiled its new 8.3L Duramax diesel, rated at 555 horsepower. But Gale Banks isn’t interested in simply repeating the numbers. He wants to know what those numbers tell us about the engine. Gale breaks down the new Duramax’s displacement, bore and stroke, horsepower per liter, CGI block and steel pistons, then compares its specific output with the current 6.6L Duramax and Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke Scorpion. The interesting part? At 555 horsepower, the new 8.3L produces about 66.9 horsepower per liter—less than either of the smaller engines Gale compares it with. In Gale’s estimation, that suggests GM may have left considerable room for future output. Then he takes the analysis one step further. If Ford were to develop the rumored 8.0L successor to the Scorpion and maintained approximately the same horsepower-per-liter output as its current 500-hp 6.7L, the math lands at nearly 597 horsepower. In other words: 600 horsepower. Gale also reacts to Andre Smirnov’s look inside the new engine from The Fast Lane Truck (TFL) and explains why GM’s use of compacted graphite iron and steel pistons gets his attention. Banks has decades of firsthand experience developing high-output diesel engines using both technologies. The diesel horsepower war may be getting interesting again.
