Description

John Oliver does a deep dive on generic drugs, why they’re so important, why they can be so vulnerable to shortages and quality issues, and why Kevin Bacon can’t solve everything all on his own. Gee it's almost as if something vital like healthcare shouldn't be treated as just another for-profit commodity

I work in a pharmacy and one item that isn't discussed here is the time it takes away in a pharmacy to deal with these drug quality issues. We have 4 quality assurance pharmacists that deal with these types of reports and we are evaluated every year on how quickly we deal with these issues, including potentially needing to call thousands of patients in a few days. If we didn't deal with these issues on time we would lose our license, the manufacturer gets a slap on the wrist.

I work in preclinical pharmacology rn and one thing that's never discussed is that the fillers on medications actually sometimes have drug absorption properties. So if you take multiple medications they could all be interacting with each other and no one besides the formulation teams would know.

Whats most disturbing isn´t the fact that production gets outsourced overseas. It´s that there, you could run the whole operation for like 50% the cost if done properly, they CHOOSE to run it on 10% to squeese every last cent out of it.

I worked in a Walgreens Pharmacy for 4 years. Now. I work in a hospital, both in the emergency department and the lab. Drug shortages are crippling to the health system, and devastating for patients and the providers who are trying to prescribe them

I use transdermal Buprenorphine as a part of my pain control program. The brand product is ridiculously expensive and the insurance demanded I use the generic patch, a savings of about $36/ month to the insurance company. The adhesive on the generic irritates my skin and I had noticed it didn't seem to work as well. Not until the drug wasn't found in my monthly drug screen despite using the generic as directed was the brand approved. I have to fight every 6 months and my Drs office has to spend valuable time with this recertification. THIS kind of poor quality control shouldn't be allowed.
