How we track YouTube's charts

viralshooter reads YouTube's most-popular charts in 20 regions, keeps the videos that chart, and follows their numbers. Here is what we cover and how.

A video can chart in several regions, so the region counts add up to more than the total.

How often we update

  • Charts: every region's most-popular chart and its category charts, about every 6 hours.
  • Views, likes and comments: hourly for videos published in the last 2 days, every few hours for big videos (200K+ views) of the past week, and daily for the rest of the last 30 days.
  • Each video's and channel's full YouTube record: refreshed within 30 days.

What comes from YouTube, and what is ours

From the YouTube Data API

Titles, channels, views, likes, comments, subscribers, publish dates, durations, categories, tags, languages and regions as YouTube declares them. Shown as returned, never edited.

Calculated by viralshooter

Where and how high a video charted in the regions we read, its age, views per hour and the change since our last reading. Marked ◆ wherever they appear.

How long we keep data

YouTube's API rules let us store its data for up to 30 days unless we refresh it. We refresh the videos we still track and delete the rest within 30 days, so older videos drop off the board.
