On the dock at Galle harbour, fisherman Nuwan had left the end of his mooring rope draped over a bollard when a wild grey mongoose spotted it and froze. To the mongoose, it was a cobra. It puffed up, circled, then lunged and bit it behind the head, yanked it off the bollard and danced around it, ready for a counterattack. None came.
