Description
An extraordinary aviation emergency unfolded aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured after being attacked by his co-pilot. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and help subdue the attacker. Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun, a plumber, helped restrain the attacker and briefly assisted with the aircraft controls before off-duty pilots on board took over. The aircraft eventually landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Machchhar and the passengers involved, saying their actions prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. Important: Authorities are still investigating the attacker's motive. Netanyahu has said it is too early to determine whether the incident was a terrorist attack or something else.
