    The bullet itself will not go very far. the most "dangerous" part about this happening is that the casing tears itself apart and is ejected in random directions, moving fast enough to break skin but not much faster than that.

    I had a guy next to me drop a round and it went off when it hit the ground. The round hit him in the chest and left a serious bruise. The casing ripped into two pieces and went across the firing range in opposite directions.

    since the round is not inside the firearm’s chamber, the pressure from the explosion inside the cartridge clearly has a lot of space to expand into, if the round is in the chamber the gas is trapped and forced to push the projectile outward causing its absurdly high velocity and lethality
